Reviewing Amazon Travel Products

As a traveler and a crewmember of a cruise ship, I spend much of my life crammed into small spaces and should only bring items that with either be or will make my items compact so that I can take what I need wherever I go. These days, most of what I need to make my life easier can be found on Amazon. Now, I would still recommend finding another companies that sell similar items, but in a pinch, Amazon is usually the best resource.

I have received many recommendations from other travelers, Buzzfeed articles, and even just random searches for what I was looking for. If you are planning to spend more time traveling, or taking on a life aboard a cruise ship or in the tourism industry, here are some of the products I have purchased to help make my life easier. Many were good, while others weren't as much. Hopefully, some of these products will help make your travel experiences more convenient!

What to Expect

I will divide this article into two main parts: products and clothing. As mentioned earlier, many of these were recommended by Buzzfeed, which is the only thing I would use that website for, as my experience with them has been mainly positive. I would still recommend checking all the product reviews when you do the browsing.

As for my reviews here, I will be using a five star system just like Amazon. If you have any recommendations at the end of this article, please feel free to leave your comment, as I would love to check it out!

Products

Who doesn't love a good little widget that helps make the travel experience just a little less stressful? Especially when you're traveling by yourself? Take a gander at these handy dandy items to see if they can benefit your time away.

Insoles

Product: Tread Labs

Traveling with Plantar Fasciitis requires a good quality insole. These insoles are sold as a set, with a reusable plastic arch support and a foot pad, attaching the two with Velcro. When the pad wears out, which can be 6 months or longer, you can simply buy the replacement pads for much cheaper than the whole apparatus itself.

I have been using Tread Labs for years and they haven't let me down yet. Cost effective and comfortable, these insoles are not only wonderful for travel, but working long hours and gym time. They can also be purchased from their direct website.

My rating: 5 stars

Body Roller

Product: Smooth Reach

If you're traveling solo and want to go to the beach, this is the product for you. We can't reach the back area, so apply sunscreen to this body roller before you put your swimsuit on and viola! Your back is safe from the harmful UV rays.

The first one you buy comes with 3 rollers total, and the arm can extend up to a foot, depending on how long your arms are. For us solo travelers, you no longer need to wear a shirt while swimming, or ask a complete stranger to apply sunscreen for you.

Unfortunately, this product is currently out of order, which I think is a good indicator of how well it works. If you're interested, make sure you check out their Amazon page for when it's back in stock.

Jewelry Organizer

Product: Bagsmart

If you're planning a longer vacation or holiday and will be visiting fancy sites, or if you're working a cruise ship in a front-facing position, you will likely need to bring a few trinkets with you to look more formal. Bagsmart offered a foldable jewelry case that is small enough to fit into your carry-on in case you have any fears of packing your pieces in your regular luggage.

There are pockets for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings that will keep them all safe and secure. However, if you are planning to bring stud or post earrings, I would recommend a separate holder for them, as these pockets can sometimes warp or even break them. These pockets are better suited for hoop and dangle earrings.

My rating: 4.5 stars

Toiletry Bag

Product: Bagsmart

This incredibly functional toiletry bag holds all of your travel-sized products in place so that they don't spill! The handy hanger allows you to set it up on hooks, the sides of bunk beds, or bars in the bathroom. There are smaller pockets for you to put cotton rounds, Q-tips, flossers, toothbrushes, or even a few pieces of jewelry.

Sorry about the glare

Keep in mind that this bag is meant for smaller toiletries. When full-size toiletries are put in, if they are overloaded, they will leak and can soak through the bag. If any of the travel-size toiletries leak or burst, their output usually stays confined to the inside of the bag. The case can be used for both sizes, but must not be too full.

My rating: 5 stars

Shoe Holder

Product: Mossio

This shoe holder can hold up to 3 pairs of shoes, provided they are small enough. I am able to fit a pair of gym shoes, black flats, and strappy sandals for the beach into this bag. This keeps your dirty shoes from touching or contaminating any other clothes or products in your suitcase and keeps them compacted to save more room.

That being said, this bag usually works better with stow-away luggage, especially if you're bringing heavier shoes for high intensity activities like hiking. When traveling with a carry-on bag, it takes up a precious amount of room. It would be better to use another bag to stow your shoes for carry-on.

My rating: 4 stars

Knee Braces

Product: IPow

For the active traveler, do not leave home without some form of support for your knees! Whether you wear them as you do your activities or after them, your body will thank you. The I-Pow knee braces support your patella when applied correctly, and ease and minimize pain. They also work miracles when in locations that require a lot of stair climbing.

Good for power kicks

Mine have stood on their own for about over 2 years, but now the Velcro is starting to fray. I will still use this brand, although it is not as long-lasting as I'd hoped.

My rating: 4.5 stars

Compression Cubes

Product: ShackePak

You will be spoiled after taking on clothing compressors! As a person who practically lives out of suitcases, these compactors allow for you to pile in more clothes than you thought you could bring with you in your carry-on. And, if you have multiple bags and suitcases that you live out of, you can use them to keep your clothes relatively low on wrinkles!

Notice that the lower left wasn't even filled!

One of my tactics is to bring two full compressors, and one empty one for my dirty clothes so that I can use up the same amount of space until I can wash my laundry. One trip with these compression cubes is all you need before your life changes. ShackePak also provides a laundry bag, which I use for my shoes in my carry-on.

My rating: 5 stars

Multi-Charger

Product: Anker

This multi-charger has 5 slots for you to plug in and charge your electronics, or even share when you're on the road. It is highly efficient and small enough for travel to where it won't take up much space. The only downside is that it only offers one size for the charger cables, so if you have a super fast charger for your phone, the port won't fit it.

Aside from that, this charger is helpful for not only your electronics, but any friends you may meet along the way. I recommend this charger for domestic travel to save space.

My rating: 4.5 stars

Travel Adapter

Product: Unidapt

Adapters are an absolutely must whenever you travel internationally, but you're not always going to have room to charge all of your electronics. Instead of the redundancy of purchasing an adapter and then a multi-charger, this adapter comes with 4 ports!

Once again, to save space, this adapter is far more convenient than bringing a multi-charger, unless you are bringing a dozen electronics with you. In that case, you can have the best of both worlds with this product! It'll make your life easier either way.

My Rating: 5 stars

Charger Cord Case

Product: BUBM

On the subject of charger cords, how annoying is it to untangle those cords, or to dig around in your bag looking for the right one? Look no further than the cord case, which is sold in multiple sizes. I bought the smallest size, which has 8 slots for cords alone, and also has enough room for me to keep a charge port and portable battery inside. The larger case does has slots for battery packs, so if you carry more electronics than most, this may be a better option.

The small size does it for me, and it fits in smaller pockets of full size backpacks. This makes it convenient for when you're staying in smaller establishments.

My Rating: 5 stars

Airplane Backpack

Product: Coowoz

Are you familiar with the Tardis?

Yes, this baby is definitely bigger on the inside! In the bottom is a separate pocket for extra shoes, which works amazingly with boots, especially if they pick up a good amount of dirt and mud from hiking. The other sections of the backpack have slots for your phone, laptops/tablets, and medication.

There are outer pockets as well, with three on the front, and one on the back which I would recommend for your wallet. It is also adjustable with the straps on the sides, and can hold two larger water bottles with its elastic holders. Not only do I love this one, but I have seen it on dozens of people on the cruises I have worked on. Hey, if cruisers love it, that's good enough for me!

My Rating: 5 stars

Anti-Theft Backpack

Product: Pincel

Wearing backpacks while traveling is usually a bad idea, but this one is smaller and stylish enough to wear out on the town and not give yourself away as a tourist. The zipper for the main pocket is against your back, making it difficult for people to try to open it. There are also two smaller pockets on the sides with hidden zippers. And it's water resistant!

This backpack can also be converted into a large-sized purse, as it comes with a shoulder strap, but personally, I find that it looks a bit bulky, and a little easier to break into. Regardless, it's comfy, it's convenient, and can be brought to nicer restaurants without looking tacky. And it has two water bottle pockets that can fit Contigos!

My Rating: 5 stars

Anti-Theft Purse

Product: Travelon

For the trips to Italy or France, or any country that has finer establishments, this purse is the way to go. It has locking zippers, multiple pockets in the main section, and an adjustable pocket for a water bottle. It also has RFID blocking to prevent cyber theft.

However, this purse has a tendency to work too well. The zippers can sometimes take effort to open, and the RFID blocking prevents all signals from all sources, including your phone, so it's as good as being on airplane mode when in there.

Being a sleek, black color, it is good for all occasions, and looks fancy enough to take into high-end establishments. Other colors are available as well.

My Rating: 4.5 stars

Money Belt

Product: LANNEY

In the vein of anti-theft packs, there are some regions that are crawling with thieves and pickpockets where you shouldn't have a bag with you or anything in your pockets (*coughBarcelonacough*). That's where this lovely under-the shirt money belt comes into play. It is adjustable and comfortable as it offers pockets for your phone, cash money, payments cards, and anything else you may need.

Good for men and women, it also has the RFID blocking patches that you can put in at your leisure and still allow your phone to retain a connection. I not only use it for travel, but also for cosplay with outfits that don't have pockets.

My Rating: 5 stars

Travel Wallet

Product: Zoppen

Let me just say that when I purchased this wallet, it instantly became my go-to wallet. With RFID-blocking technology, you can fit in several credit cards, your ID, your immunization card, cash, and, most importantly, your passport!

Yeah, I'm covering the card pockets, but I was too lazy to remove the cards

The wallet is long and wide enough for you to fit in your plane tickets, so it's easy to handle when going through TSA at the airport. You have the option of using a wrist attachment if you'd rather use it as a clutch, or stowing it in your purse or bag as usual. And it comes in a dozen colors!

My Rating: 5 stars

Mini Hair Straightener

Product: Wavytalk

This 0.7 inch ceramic hair straightener does its work! Whether you always style your hair, or only do it for special occasions, having one that won't take up much room is supremely convenient. It may take a little more time to use on your hair, but it does a fair job of straightening stubborn hair.

I also use it on the hems of dresses that flip upwards after being washed. It can save money in the case that any ironing requires an extra charge.

My Rating: 4.5 stars

Electric Travel Razor

Product: YHC

Those travelers who have gone cruising know how tiny the bathrooms are. If body hair is something that you wish to maintain while traveling, a rechargeable, electric razor is the way to go! YHC's travel electric razor is compact enough to fit into carry-on luggage, and provides a neat, close shave on your legs or any other body part.

Keep in mind that if you're looking for a smooth look, a standard disposable razor is better, but this one will at least keep anyone self-conscious about leg hair from feeling like a gorilla when going to the beach. And, though this should be common sense, do not use on sensitive areas.

My Rating: 5 stars

Sleeping Mask

Product: MZOO

Not only used for travel purposes, but if you live in a bright city area, it's a Godsend! With an adjustable band and comfortable padding around the eyes so that the fabric is not pressing directly against your eyes, it's luxurious and more hygienic than other masks! Bring it for transportation, lodging, or even for your regular sleep cycle.

Better for your eyes than the ones that press up against your lids

And it is machine washable! Set your machine to hand wash/delicate and line dry.

Rating: 5 stars

Airplane Pockets

Product: Airplane Pockets

Let me just say that I am SPOILED now. This pocket covers the airplane food tray so that you don't have to worry about what happened on that tray during the last flight, and that you can keep any items, such as your phone or water bottle, can be supported when the tray is up. I would still recommend using Wet Ones or moist towelettes on the tray first.

Next time I use more colorful products in the pockets

The only downside is that if the tray is latched, it won't work unless the tray itself is down. Still, it offers some peace of mind when you're eating, and allows you to keep your phone near without worrying about how much bacteria it can pick up.

My Rating: 5 stars

Travel-Size Air Purifier

Product: Pure Enrichment

When you're cramped in a cruise ship that's over 20 years old and doesn't have the best air filtration, an air purifier will be extremely beneficial especially if you have allergies and hay fever. Pure Enrichment provides a convenient product that works effectively to purify that dusty and sometimes stale air.

I added stickers because I can

Battery operated with three settings, the low and medium settings can last you through the night. The battery is rechargeable, and you can purchase filters in packs of 4 from Jorair after several months of constant usage. Though small, it definitely makes a noticeable difference.

My Rating: 4.5 stars

Compression Ankle Socks

Product: SB Sox

Compression socks are a must for airplane travel, but if you have poor blood circulation in your feet, these ankle socks work better for every season. Available in several colors depending on your skin tone, they are easy to slip on and off and leave your toes free to wiggle.

However, it can be an issue if you have plantar faciitis or issues with your metatarsals. Compression socks are meant to be tight on your feet to stimulate your blood flow, so if they aren't fitted properly, they can press uncomfortably against pressure points on your feet. Adjusting the socks can make them more comfortable, but can be an inconvenience when you're already on the go.

I would recommend these more for people with circulation issues than with foot problems.

My Rating: 3 stars

Foldable Duffle Bag

Product: WANDF

Available in a dozen colors, this 18" waterproof duffle bag folds into a 5"x5" pack that you can put into your suitcase in case you may need to bring an extra bag with you. The main part of the bag provides plenty of room for extra shoes, souvenirs, or dirty clothes when you're returning from your trip.

It fits carry-on dimensions from even the stingiest of airlines, and does its due job. However, my mom got the Foldie, which includes a compartment for shoes. The WANDF is convenient, but the Foldie is the better of the two products.

My Rating: 4 stars

Luggage Scale

Product: Etekcity

Where would I be without this? When you're traveling with baggage of not only clothing but supplies to last you 6-7 months, those suitcases are gonna get heavy! To save time having to shift items around at the airport, or paying extra for going over the limit of (usually) 50 lbs., this scale more than pays for itself!

Thanks to the scale, I'm able to go through my suitcases and remove anything or transfer items to my carry-on bags so that I can have less stress at the airport. Even better, it has the option to switch between the metric and imperial weight so that you can match the limit in any country.

My Rating: 5 stars

Clothing

Packing light can be difficult, so bringing the right clothes can help immensely! Here are the ones I bought for travel purposes, and how well they work when on the road. And I reiterate: these were purchased expressly for travel.

Yoga Pants

Product: Leggings Depot

Comfort is everything when traveling, and a comfortable pair of pants is where everyone should start. So look no further than these incredible yoga pants, perfect for travel! Complete with pockets, cuffed ankles, and dryer safe, these pants move beautifully when walking, and stay loose enough when sitting for long periods of time.

Ever since purchasing these, I bring them for both domestic and international flights, and even around the house for time to time. Good for yoga, travel, and leisure!

My Rating: 5 stars

Fleece-Lined Flared Leggings

Product: BALEAF

Traveling in the winter time requires thicker attire. These leggings, which I bought flared, are thinly lined with fleece but kept me nice and warm while wandering the Royal Mile of Edinburgh in autumnal October. Though they can sometimes be mistaken for scrubs, they are leisurely enough to wear while out on the town provided you're staying casual.

Oh, and have I mentioned the pockets? These pants have not 2, but 4 pockets! Comfy, convenient, and dryer safe, they are perfect for those colder regions or times of year when you need just a little extra lining to stay warm.

Fun fact: they're also flame resistant.

My Rating: 5 stars

Hiking Pants

Product: Libin

The best hiking pants I ever had were The North Face capris I bought from REI years ago, so when they sprung holes in the thighs and this beloved style was no longer in production, I needed an alternative. These pants are definitely convenient and airy enough for a 10+ mile hike.

With 5 deep pockets and cuffed ankles, they stay in place and are easy to move in all different types of terrains. However, the material is light and, while it hasn't happened yet, can be easier to tear. They are also hand-wash with line dry, but they do dry rather quickly based on the fabric. I do like these pants, but there are better quality pants available from other retailers.

My Rating: 4 stars

Foldable Hat

Product: Furtalk

Baseball caps will give you away as a tourist, but when you're walking in the hot sun all day, you need a semi-fancy chapeau to block the sun's rays. Wearing hats on a plane is often annoying, and you don't want to crush it in your luggage. Enter the foldable hat!

This hat flattens down to a quarter of its size and can fit in your suitcase, carry-on, or even purse. When unfolded, it can retain some of the folds, but not so much that it's distracting. With a medium-sized brim, it usually covers the whole face and a good part of the neck. The band is also adjustable for a more comfortable fit to your head.

My Rating: 5 stars

Wide-Brim Sun Hat

Product: Inogih

Sun hats are good for socializing, but what about the great outdoors? If you're going to be on the water, areas without shade, or harsh weather conditions, you're going to need something more protective. Enter the wide-brim sun hat, which has an opening for your pony tail, and a drawstring to keep the hat in place.

Available in several color schemes, this hat dries quickly and protects not only your face, but your neck as well. It is also foldable, but has a tendency to hold the fold more than other hats, and can't be ironed out. Other than that issue, it's a great purchase!

My Rating: 4.5 stars

High-Pony Hat

Product: Fadachy

Another hat? Well, when you're hiking in shadier area and have gentler weather, a simpler hat will provide just enough protection to make you look cute. Try the baseball cap with an open back for an adorable high ponytail that brings both functionality and fashion to the trails.

Several colors, phrases, and styles are available for the wearer to pick from. I did have an issue with this hat, unfortunately, in that the seam was linked right in the front by the brim, and no matter how many times I adjusted the band, this seam would leave a big indent in my forehead. I don't know if it was an issue just with the one I was issued, or if it's a design flaw, but in the end, I bought another that was completely flat against my forehead.

My Rating: 2.5 stars

T-Shirt Dress

Product: Merokeety

It's rare for me to like an article of clothing so much that I buy another. That's exactly what I did with this t-shirt dress! And I have lost count of how many women I've seen wearing this dress on the ships I've served on.

It's definitely a casual dress with nothing formal to it, but it makes enough of an effort to make you look like you tried. There are pockets in the front, has a sash, and can come in the t-shirt fashion, or as a tank-top dress. The only downside? It's hand wash and line dry. Other than that, totally worth it!

My Rating: 5 stars

Flannel Skirt

Product: Belle Poque

Bringing a skirt is not always a must, but if you must, it should be one that can be used for multiple occasions. Take a look at this shirt from Belle Poque: it is flannel, has a simple black and white plaid pattern, and, most importantly, pockets!

The skirt has a nice flow to it and is airy enough to keep you cool in the summer, and roomy that you can wear a pair of fleece-lined leggings underneath with no one the wiser. Just add your favorite bold-colored top, and you will look amazing! The skirt also comes with a cheap belt that you can wear if you want, but it looks good both ways.

My Rating: 5 stars

Padded Camisoles

Product: Lemedy

When traveling, good support is integral to women's comfort. Standard and sports bras are expected, but what if you carry button-up blouses and prefer to wear something else underneath? Look no further than these sports bras, which in reality are padded camisoles.

These spaghetti-strapped camis have removable pads and hug the body nicely. They are lightweight enough to wear under regular t-shirts, blouses, or even sweaters and jumpers. They pack as well can also be worn as a top for a morning jog.

The sizing for this product runs a little small, so order 1 size up for the best fit. And, these are also hand wash with line dry, but they dry decently quick.

My Rating: 4.5 stars

Swimsuit

Product: Tempt Me

Another article of clothing that I have seen dozens of women sporting on their travels. This halter-top one-piece suit has a deep cut, padded front covered in mesh, with a mesh back as well. Available in a variety of colors and designs, this one piece suit is comfortable and flattering for almost every body type.

Yes, I'm wearing shorts

The only downside to this swimsuit is that the mesh is already starting to unravel after only 1.5 years. It will probably last for another few months. However, it still looks good on almost everyone I've seen wear it, and I think that makes for a good point.

My Rating: 4 stars

The Final Word

I hope that these recommendations help if you're looking for products to make your travel experience better! I would still say to buy local or from small business owners, such as on Etsy, but if you're in a pinch, maybe one of these products can help out.

Also, these items aren't the only ones I have for travel purposes, so another post may be coming later with others I own. The ones I selected for this article are the ones I believe are most likely to be purchased from Amazon and used by regular travelers.

In the meantime, I'll be back on the seas soon and won't have as much time to post, but I'll be working on a blog about various Caribbean ports and the countries they're from.

Happy New Year!
